Game drives in Lemek Conservancy
Game drives in Lemek feel different from the start. With vehicle numbers strictly limited across the conservancy, you’re rarely sharing a sighting. No queues of minibuses, no jostling for position. Just you, your expert Maasai guide, and whatever is happening in front of you.
Daily game drives
A typical day at Mattikoko runs around two game drives. The first leaves at dawn, early enough to be out as the sun rises over the Kileleoni Hills and the plains come to life. The second goes out in the late afternoon, when the heat of the day has eased, predators begin to move, and the light turns golden. Both drives last around three hours, timed to put you in the field when wildlife is at its most active and the light is its most magical.
For guests who want to go further, full-day game drives into the Maasai Mara National Reserve can be arranged in advance, giving you access to the river crossing points during Migration season, and a chance to explore the wider ecosystem beyond the conservancy.
Wildlife encounters
Lemek Conservancy holds some of the finest wildlife in the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem. Because vehicle numbers are strictly limited, encounters here feel categorically different from the crowded experience in the main reserve.
You can expect great big cat sightings, as Lemek has healthy resident populations of lions, leopards and cheetahs. And because they are relatively undisturbed by traffic, their behaviour is natural and unhurried. Elephants move through in family groups throughout the year, relaxed and entirely natural in their behaviour in ways that are harder to observe where vehicle pressure is higher. Beyond the headline species, expect buffalo, giraffe, hippo, hyena, a wide variety of antelope, and over 450 bird species.
Between July and October, the Great Migration passes through Lemek, and during this period we can also venture into the Maasai Mara National Reserve to witness river crossings.
Game viewing in Lemek Conservancy
Lemek offers something special. It’s a 16,000-acre private conservancy wilderness that sits within the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem but offers a more exclusive and intimate experience. As a private conservancy, it limits vehicle numbers and works closely with local landowners, creating a quieter and more sustainable environment for both guests and wildlife. Lemek is where the best of the Mara meets the calm and privacy of a conservation-focused sanctuary.
At a sighting in Lemek, you will often be the only vehicle there. No convoys, no crowds, no radio-coordinated rush to the next kill. Just the animal, your guide, and the time to actually watch what’s happening.
